Enrichment Classes

Ages 7 – 12

“How Great Thou Art”

Art is a combination of Bible story/lesson and art skill with the subject pertaining to the story.  Students will learn to care for the art supplies and use a variety of media to create bespoke pieces.  15 minutes will be set aside for students to build friendships. Be sure to pack a snack for this time if you would like or a light snack can be provided at an additional cost.  *How Great Thou Art is the current chosen curriculum but is subject to change and could be supplemented. 


Literature

Reading, focusing on expression, narration, discussion, sensory props, projects, food (should the story lend itself), kinetic activities, plot elements, and writing to understand the style or characters more will aid in comprehension. Many of the books and experiences we’ll have this year have been chosen from the list in the book, Honey for a Child’s Heart.  Titles are subject to change but as of now, on the list for the year are: Charlotte’s Web, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Swallows and Amazons, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle and Tom’s Midnight Garden. Unit studies which incorporate other related topics will allow us to veer off the trail to learn some interesting new facts but we’ll get back on the trail, i promise.


Science/STEM

Science teaches investigation, exploration and STEM lessons so students can truly know,  understand and be scientifically literate.  Students may work on projects, and develop skills such as designing solutions to problems, writing, and sharing orally with a group or partner. They will learn management skills, cooperation, and demonstrate their scientific knowledge within a biblical worldview.  *BJU Press Science is the current chosen curriculum but is subject to change and could be supplemented.


Spanish

Listening, speaking, reading and writing, using songs, videos and a few other resources will help your child acquire the Spanish language in a relaxed, natural environment. Part of the curriculum is learning about Mexico’s history, culture and making Mexican food and crafts. *The current curriculum is La Clase Divertida, but could be supplemented with other resources.


Freedom Club

Ages 7-12

Make it Monday: On this day we bust out the Legos, puzzles and arts and crafts. Students also interested in the Garden Club can help out with this year-long project. These activities nurture the creative side and encourage risk-taking knowing that perfectionism isn’t the goal.  Since there are so many fun activities, they will alternate from week to week. There will also be time to play outside on the playground. 

Talented Tuesday: Students must prepare to learn, teach or coach their friends as they play chess, checkers and board games.  These activities encourage cooperation, strategizing, communicating, turn-taking and respect. There will also be time to play outside on the playground. 

Wacky Wednesday: Students can wear a crazy outfit while they play volleyball, basketball or football. These activities encourage the whole child to let loose, be silly, bring out their competitive spirit, play hard, have fun and show good sportsmanship. There will also be time to play on the playground. 

Thoughtful Thursday: On this day we think of our community and how we can put a smile on someone’s face aka fulfilling the 2nd commandment (“Love your neighbor as yourself.”).  We might make cookies for the fire department, write cards to veterans, make dog blankets for the animal shelter, assemble blessing bags for the homeless or paint rocks with positive messages and verses.  The activities will be different all year due to the seasons, holidays or because the ideas are student-initiated. There will also be time to play outside on the playground.
